Why Forge Fired Charcoal?

Axe & Kindle Forge Fired is 100% American hardwood lump charcoal, retort-fired in small batches and screened twice before it reaches the bag. The 2-Pack gets you two 20 lb bags, 40 lb total, so you're stocked for more cooks between orders. It lights fast, burns hot and clean, and leaves very little ash behind.

  • Lights in minutes — no starter fluid needed
  • Burns hotter and cleaner than kiln-made lump
  • Fully carbonized in a sealed retort oven, not an open concrete kiln
  • Screened twice — once on the shaker table, once again at bagging
  • Low ash for easy cleanup and better airflow in kamados and ceramics
  • Nothing added in our process. Just wood and heat.
  • FREE SHIPPING in the contiguous United States
  • Produced in Kentucky by Hardwood Republic

Charcoal 2-Pack Specifications

Axe & Kindle's Forge Fired lump charcoal is made from 100% kiln-dried American hardwood and carbonized in a sealed retort oven — a closed, fully controlled process that drives off everything but the carbon. The result is charcoal that lights fast, runs hot, and burns clean enough for an open kitchen. The 2-Pack doubles up with two 20 lb bags, so the next cook is already covered.

  • Free nationwide shipping included
  • High, steady searing heat — for steaks, chops and anything that needs a hard crust
  • Clean, minimal smoke — no acrid startup smell, no chemical off-odor
  • Low ash — better airflow in kamados and ceramics, faster cleanup
  • Consistent sizing — screened on intake and again at bagging

Our hardwood arrives kiln-dried from American cabinet and flooring mills, then gets double-screened. No chemicals, no additives and no fillers are used anywhere in our process. Just wood and heat.

WHAT'S IN YOUR 2-PACK

  • FREE SHIPPING in the contiguous United States
  • Consistent, grill-ready piece sizing

Both bags are screened on intake and again at the bagging line, so you get pieces you can actually build a fire with instead of a bag of fines.

BENEFITS OF FORGE FIRED CHARCOAL

Lump charcoal is the closest you get to cooking over a wood fire without the wait. No binders, no briquette dust, no lighter-fluid taste — just hardwood, carbonized down to almost pure fuel:

  • Ready to cook in minutes — no chimney babysitting, no starter fluid
  • High, even searing heat for steaks, chops and live-fire cooking
  • Clean-burning with minimal smoke, so flavor comes from the food
  • Low ash means better airflow and far less cleanup after a cook
  • Adjustable — open the vents for a hard sear, close them down to hold a low fire
  • Nothing added in our process: no binders, no petroleum, no fillers

WHAT'S A RETORT?

A retort is a sealed oven — no air, no flame. The wood cooks in its own gases until nothing's left but carbon. Most lump charcoal is made the opposite way: 100,000 pounds at a time in open concrete kilns, bark and all, cooking for a week. We run controlled charges and turn our ovens three to four times a day. The difference shows up the first time you light it. Less ash. Less smoke. A cleaner, hotter flame — and charcoal that's fully cooked all the way through instead of half-carbonized in the middle.

OUR PROCESS

Our hardwood arrives kiln-dried from American cabinet and flooring mills — clean, dry stock, not bark-covered slab wood. It's screened on intake, charged into the retort, and cooked down under full control until it's carbon all the way through.

Finished charcoal is screened a second time at the bagging line to pull out the fines, then sewn into a kraft bag and palletized the same day. Small batches, several oven turns a day, and two screenings between the woodpile and your grill.

BUILT FOR LIVE FIRE

Forge Fired runs hot enough for a hard sear and clean enough for an open kitchen. It's the same charcoal we put in front of chefs running wood-fired grills, hearths and yakitori counters — and it works just as well in a kettle on a Saturday.

  • Searing steaks and chops — high, even heat with a fast recovery
  • Kamados and ceramics — low ash keeps the airflow open through a long cook
  • Open-hearth and wood-fired grills — minimal smoke, so nothing muddies the plate
  • Vegetables, flatbread and seafood — clean fire, clean flavor

Open the vents and it sears. Close them down and it holds. Because the charcoal is fully carbonized, you burn fewer pieces to get the same cook.
